The big hearts at Etsy featured Jim Power today in an email with a video on him.
One word - WOW. How life bends and curves for this man is fascinating and seeing how he continues one little step at a time, like in his mosaic work — incredible. His life took him through some turbulent years in New York city, which he began as an expression of art through his mosaics on lamp posts throughout the city (since 1985). Though some 50 were removed during the 80 & 90s "clean up" of New York's campaign against anit-graffitti and vandalism, the public stood up for Jim to keep what remained as historical references and cultural art not to be messed with (and the city listened!).
Jim is recreating the ones removed, one day at a time, and a variety of other projects. Fans of his have helped him out by making a variety of social media outlets. I just love seeing how strangers can manifest so much support and care for Jim and his works of art but even more, that Jim Power has kept on crafting his work, (alongside with his dog) in telling his story of the city he loves, using discarded ceramics, glassware, etc... to make the streets of New York a little bit brighter and certainly more colorful!
