I'm Julia Allen, a designer in Napa,
California. This blog is my place for
gathering and sharing inspiration.
It's also where I can share ideas and
processes for my design work.

a posting for the rant, of just because
a moment needed to be shared.)

Inspired by master calligrapher M. Giovambattista Palatino, carefully crafted with Roman and Italian typefaces: Bembo and Goudy Trajan to celebrate his 10 year wedding anniversary to his wife that was spent in Rome.... utterly gorgeous!
A serious 12 month study on how to arrange typographical letters in the form of the coliseum. If this isn't just plain ol' beautiful and soulfully inspiring, I don't know what is! Thank you Cameron Moll (a designer, speaker, and author living in Sarasota, Florida). You've inspired this west-coast designer in ways that are so awesome!
OK, Moms and Dads of 6 year olds out there.... The Official Tooth Fairy Kitcontains one letterpress Certificate
of Record for filing with your local Tooth Fairy and one reusable
silkscreened cloth deposit bag for your first and all subsequent
transactions. The official certificate keeps record of name, age, tooth
lost, method of extraction and compensation information.
...and, did I mention it was Letterpressed!? Fabulous!
our friend lynn at satsuma press has just released her beautiful 2009 calendar titled ‘pattern + texture’. inspired by lynn’s love of japanese textiles and vintage fabrics, it is printed on 100% cotton paper, lovingly and carefully with mutiple passes of ink and impressions. last year’s calendar sold out quickly so for 2009, lynn is printing 350-400 copies. be sure to order yours before this batch is gone. i've already put in my pre-order for a copy! (if you order one for this year, she will put you on special email list for first grabs too!) each calendar is available for pre-order for $40 (plus $5 for domestic shipping).
and if your purchase is a holiday gift, lynn will include a gift card and is happy to write your message for you and send directly to your recipient (for an additional $7). [ps: after november 1st calendar prices will raise to $44 so order now if you'd like the $4 discount!]
for letterpress enthusiasts, the name snow & graham is a well known brand— a chicago letterpress duo who launched a decade ago crafting beautiful letterpress stationery and cards. what a surprise to see one of the owners/designers, Amy Graham Stigler and the proprietors of Boxcar Press to have teamed up to offer us smock i will have to add to my collection of stationery with their lovely works!
so yesterday, i decided to play . . . for little liam's third birthday - morning at the zoo, - lunch with my boys (aka, liam & oliver), - an afternoon nap next to the little nugget, - and early evening with some friends visiting definitely, good times. as i was writing thank yous for the lovely gifts received on my favorite note cards, i was reminded of a letterpress friend/colleague satsuma letterpress in corvallis, oregon. i have some lovely note cards by her that i picked up at the sf renegade craft fest you can see some here or on etsy i still believe in sending handwritten notes. there's something about the moment being captured in penmanship and the time one takes to write, seal and deliver it to the postman. plus, putting ink to paper on something so lovely, really makes me smile. hopefully for the receiver too!
